What are the black dots on the chord diagrams?

The black dots represent the root notes of a chord. Chords are made up of a group of notes. The notes that share the same name as the chord are called root notes. For example, in a C major chord, all of the C notes are root notes. In the same way, all of the A notes in an A minor 7 chord are root notes.
